Chapter 11

Next day Darcy received the much anticipated reply from Byron in which he expected to receive an opinion on his poem. He broke the seal with trembling hands – the judgement of one of the greatest living poets meant a lot to him.

Letter from Lord Byron to Mr Darcy:

Dear Darcy,

Now that is what I call poetry. It has none of that stiffness that marred your earlier work. It is free, it is fluent, it is passionate, it is ecstatic, and if the real girl is half as good as she sounds in your poem, you are a lucky man! I was particularly interested to hear that you have discovered the custom of Cavalier Servente. As it happens I have benefitted from this remarkable custom myself, and came rapidly to the conclusion that it is a more honest approach to morals than our hypocritical English attitude. After my last tour, I wrote a long narrative poem about the custom of Cavalier Servente called Beppo. Indeed, I mentioned the name of my own matchless mantenuta, in such a roundabout way that nobody noticed it. What I wrote was: “The name of this Aurora I’ll not mention”. Yes, that was her name, Aurora. But it ended badly. The passionate nature of Italians can be as much a problem as a pleasure. Her husband was extremely jealous, and when he found out, he swore he would kill me, so I had to beat a hasty retreat.

I have sent you a copy of the book, and advise you to study it closely, because you will learn a great deal about the custom that might spare you some embarrassment – or worse – at a later stage.

Yours, &c.,

Byron
